SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dominican Vice President Raquel Peña on Friday led the inauguration of a series of infrastructure projects across Greater Santo Domingo, enhancing public health, school sports, and citizen security.
The initiatives are part of the government's broader institutional strengthening agenda, overseen by President Luis Abinader's administration.
In the National District, Peña officially opened the newly renovated Dr. Félix María Goico Hospital. The project, executed by the National Health Service (SNS), is expected to directly benefit an estimated 1,029,110 residents, according to the 2022 National Census.
During the ceremony, Peña reiterated the government's commitment to prioritizing health. "Our vision is clear: to strengthen the hospital network, expand response capacity, and ensure that specialized services are accessible to everyone, regardless of their condition or place of residence," the vice president stated.
Dr. Julio César Landrón, executive director of the SNS, reported a total investment of RD$159,014,968.73 for the hospital's infrastructure and medical equipment. The comprehensive modernization included five operating rooms, a three-bed recovery area, a delivery room, a neonatal unit, sterilization facilities, and a pharmacy on the third floor.
The fourth floor now features nine rooms with a capacity for 15 beds, alongside specialized areas for maxillofacial, gastroenterology, family planning, and urology. The fifth floor received a dialysis unit with five chairs, medical residences, and a multi-purpose room. Additionally, the hospital's facade was fully renovated, and three new elevators were installed to improve accessibility and operations.
Later in Santo Domingo East, Peña inaugurated a new school baseball stadium at the Camila Henríquez Ureña Primary School in Prados de la Caña. This project, undertaken by the National Institute of Physical Education (Inefi), aims to bolster school sports programs.
Peña emphasized the role of schools as foundational spaces for athletic development and reaffirmed the government's dedication to children and youth through infrastructure that promotes values, discipline, and social cohesion. "From the government, we will continue strengthening these spaces that protect our children, support our youth, and reinforce the social fabric of our communities," she said.
Alberto Rodríguez, Inefi's executive director, explained that the complex includes four playing fields: a main baseball stadium and three additional fields designated for minor leagues, all built to modern technical standards.
Finally, in the La Caleta municipal district of Santo Domingo province, the vice president handed over the completely renovated Mirador Aéreo police station in the El Valiente sector. The Presidential Commission for Provincial Development Support (CPADP) oversaw this project.
Peña highlighted that the renovated station underscores the government's commitment to public safety and the ongoing reform and modernization of the National Police. "This space symbolizes the presence of the State and protection for those who live and work in this community. Under President Luis Abinader's leadership, police reform has become a national priority," she noted.
Ángel de la Cruz, president of Provincial Development, detailed that the station now features modern, functional areas for police operations, directly benefiting over 3,500 residents and enhancing crime prevention efforts in the area.
These inaugurations are part of a nationwide strategy to improve the quality of life for the population through strategic investments in key social, educational, and community development infrastructure across the country.
